A recent study that attempts to quantify environmental damage revealed that 97% of the earth’s area may no longer be “ecologically intact,” resulting in reduced animal populations and species loss.
The theme for this year’s Earth Day is Restore Our Earth. While parts of the world are opening up after a year of Covid-induced blockades, the event’s organizers are calling for action and highlighting the importance of fighting environmental destruction.
“The issue rejects the idea that mitigation or adaptation is the only way to deal with climate change,” says board member and chief environmental sociologist Dorceta E. Taylor.
“We can’t postpone tomorrow what we can do today,” she says. “Everyone has a role to play.”
